History of Forty Fort

The Borough of Forty Fort has a prominent place in the history of the settlement of Wyoming Valley. It is named after the forty settlers who came from Connecticut in 1770 and built a fort along the banks of the Susquehanna River for protection from hostile forces during those turbulent times. A large rock on River Street at the corner of Fort Street marks the approximate spot where the fort stood. The marker, with a bronze plaque, was placed there by the Wyoming Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on October 19,1900.
